Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your stay

Planning your stay at Villa Balāo? Here you’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions about our rooms, facilities, booking and what to expect during your stay.

The Villa Balāo Spirit

Villa Balāo is our home, and we want it to feel like one during your stay too. Our gay men-only guesthouse in Balaruc-les-Bains, near Sète, has just three double rooms, creating an intimate setting where it’s easy to feel at home, slow down and enjoy your stay at your own pace.

We welcome every guest personally and are always happy to share our favourite places, local tips and ideas for exploring the area. And if you prefer to simply relax and do your own thing, we completely respect that too.

The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with the comfort and attention to detail you would expect from an upscale guesthouse — but without unnecessary formality.

Villa Balāo is for adults only. Guests aged 16 or 17 may exceptionally stay when accompanied by an adult.

Yes. Villa Balāo is a gay men-only guesthouse, created as a relaxed and welcoming place for men to stay, whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple or with friends.

We want everyone to feel comfortable being themselves, in an open, respectful and judgement-free atmosphere. Above all, Villa Balāo is a guesthouse and our home: it is not a cruising venue or a day-use establishment.

Villa Balāo does not offer day passes or access to the pool or jacuzzi for outside visitors. These facilities are reserved for guests staying at the house, so everyone can enjoy the privacy, peace and comfort of their stay.

Guests staying at Villa Balāo may occasionally invite a visitor, subject to our prior approval and an additional access fee.

Yes. Villa Balāo is clothing-optional during the warmer months, but nudity is never required. You are free to enjoy the garden, pool and outdoor relaxation areas naked or clothed, whichever you feel most comfortable with.

The garden is fully enclosed and screened from outside view, so you can enjoy naturism in privacy and complete peace of mind. We simply ask guests to wear something during meals, and a sarong or similar cover-up is appreciated in the indoor communal areas.

Villa Balāo is not affiliated with any naturist federation or association. Naturism here is simply part of the relaxed atmosphere, with an emphasis on freedom, respect and consideration for others.

There are several naturist beaches near Villa Balāo that are particularly popular with gay visitors, each with its own atmosphere.

Les Aresquiers in Frontignan — the closest and probably the wildest, with a mix of sea, Mediterranean vegetation and quieter spots.

Cap d’Agde — the region’s best-known naturist destination, with its long clothing-optional beach and the distinctive atmosphere that has made it famous.

Jalabert Beach, near Sète — a quieter, more natural spot for those who prefer somewhere a little less busy.

L’Espiguette in Le Grau-du-Roi — a vast sandy beach on the edge of the Camargue, with plenty of space and a beautiful natural setting.

There are also other beaches and more secluded spots along the coast where naturism is possible, sometimes more discreetly.

Planning Your Stay

Yes, although you’re more likely to find it on the beaches and around the region than just around the corner. Villa Balāo is first and foremost a place to slow down, enjoy the sunshine and take your time.

In summer, much of the local gay scene revolves around the naturist beaches along the coast. For nightlife, Montpellier is the liveliest option, with gay bars, clubs, saunas and parties, while Cap d’Agde has an atmosphere that is… well, very much its own.

Whether you’re looking for a drink, a night out, somewhere to dance, a sauna or a chance to meet people, we’ll be happy to point you towards the places that are worth checking out while you’re here. And if your plan is simply not to leave the pool all day, we completely understand that too.

Balaruc-les-Bains is a welcoming destination where gay travellers can relax and enjoy the region with complete peace of mind.

Yes. Villa Balāo is located in a quiet residential area of Balaruc-les-Bains, while still being close to shops and restaurants.

Within about a ten-minute walk, you’ll find bakeries, local shops and places to eat. Balaruc-les-Bains itself offers an even wider choice of restaurants, shops, a local market and everything you might need during your stay.

And when it comes to eating well, we’ll be happy to share our favourite places with you. Around the Thau Lagoon, from Sète to the surrounding villages, there’s certainly no shortage of good places to discover.

Check-in is normally between 4 pm and 7 pm. We simply ask you to let us know your expected arrival time so we can be here to welcome you.

Arriving a little earlier? You’re welcome to start enjoying Villa Balāo and its outdoor spaces, even if your room isn’t ready yet. And if you’d like to settle in sooner, we’ll of course do our best to accommodate you.

On the day you leave, check-out is by 11 am. There’s no need to rush off, though: you’re welcome to stay a little longer and enjoy the garden, pool or jacuzzi before heading home.

Yes. Villa Balāo has free private parking directly on the property, with one parking space for each guest room.

If you’re travelling by electric car, EV charging is also available on site for an additional fee, and there are public charging stations nearby.

Rooms & Life at Villa Balāo

All three of our rooms offer the same level of comfort, each with its own distinctive style and atmosphere. They feature quality bedding, air conditioning, high-speed Wi-Fi and blackout shutters for complete darkness and a restful night’s sleep.

Each room has its own private bathroom with a spacious walk-in shower, featuring both a rainfall showerhead and a handheld shower. For added comfort and personal hygiene, a handheld bidet spray is also provided next to the toilet.

Bathroom towels are provided, along with fouta towels for the pool and outdoor areas. You’ll also find complimentary toiletries and a few thoughtful touches prepared for your stay. All our rooms are non-smoking.

Rooms accommodate a maximum of two guests and cannot accommodate an extra bed. You can find full details of the facilities and individual features of each room on the Kiumé, Muani and Otoko pages.

Yes. Breakfast is included in your stay and served every morning — and it’s an important part of the Villa Balāo experience.

We like breakfast to be generous, fresh and a little different from one day to the next. You can expect fresh, local and artisan products alongside plenty of homemade treats: bread and pastries, jams, local garrigue honey, fresh fruit, artisan juices, yoghurt, cereals, cheeses, eggs and homemade cakes… The selection changes with the seasons — and sometimes simply with what we feel like making that morning.

Breakfast is served from 9 am to 10.30 am, indoors or in the garden depending on the weather. There’s no rush — it’s one of those moments of the day we want you to take your time and enjoy.

Have an allergy, intolerance or special dietary requirement? Let us know before your stay and we’ll do our best to make sure there’s something for you to enjoy.

Yes. If you feel like staying in and making the most of Villa Balāo, we can prepare something for lunch, dinner or simply a bite to eat, depending on what you’re in the mood for and what we have available.

Sharing boards, light bites or a more substantial meal, ice cream and snacks… We also offer a selection of hot and cold drinks, aperitifs and something a little more festive when the mood calls for it. Meals are exclusively for guests staying at Villa Balāo and are served indoors or in the garden, depending on the weather.

Fresh microfiltered still and sparkling water is available free of charge throughout your stay.

As Villa Balāo is a guesthouse rather than a self-catering property, the kitchen is not available for guest use, and we don’t allow outside food or meal deliveries. We don’t offer in-room dining either.

If you have any allergies, intolerances or specific dietary requirements, just let us know.

And if you feel like going out, there are plenty of restaurants nearby. We’ll be happy to share our favourite places with you during your stay.

Yes. The pool, jacuzzi and garden are there for you to enjoy throughout your stay. Settle down by the pool, unwind in the jacuzzi, read in the shade, play a game of pétanque or simply do absolutely nothing.

Our heated saltwater pool, saltwater jacuzzi, kept at 36°C, and the different relaxation areas around the garden are all available for our guests to enjoy.

Sun loungers, daybeds and outdoor seating can be found around the pool and throughout the garden. There’s also a hot outdoor shower and outdoor toilet, so you don’t need to head back to your room every time.

These spaces are shared by the guests staying in our three rooms. We simply ask everyone to enjoy them while being considerate of others and respecting the peaceful atmosphere of Villa Balāo.

No, pets are not allowed at Villa Balāo. As much as we love animals, we’ve made this choice to preserve the peaceful atmosphere of the house, ensure the comfort of all our guests and protect the small wildlife that visits our garden.

If you’re travelling with a guide dog or assistance animal, please contact us before your stay so we can make the necessary arrangements and welcome you as comfortably as possible.

Villa Balāo is completely smoke-free indoors, including all guest rooms and communal areas.

You’re welcome to smoke or vape in the outdoor areas, while simply being considerate of other guests. Ashtrays are provided and, to help us look after the garden, we ask that cigarette butts are never dropped on the ground.

Smoking and vaping are not permitted in the pool or jacuzzi, or while seated at the table.

Villa Balāo is first and foremost a place to relax, feel at ease and enjoy good company. Everyone should be able to enjoy their stay in their own way, while respecting the peace, privacy and personal space of others.

Inside the house, we like to leave our shoes at the door — our little “No shoes, no stress” rule that helps keep things relaxed and the house comfortable for everyone.

Beyond that, we simply trust everyone to be considerate: respect for the house and for each other, discretion, and the freedom to be yourself while respecting everyone else’s. That’s really all it takes to keep Villa Balāo a relaxed and enjoyable place for everyone.

Accessibility & Safety

Villa Balāo is not fully accessible for guests with reduced mobility, and some features of the house and outdoor areas may make a stay difficult depending on your individual mobility needs.

If you have specific accessibility requirements, please contact us before booking so we can give you clear and accurate information based on your needs.

We will naturally do everything we can to make your stay as comfortable as possible wherever the layout and features of the house allow.

Villa Balāo is located in a quiet residential neighbourhood of Balaruc-les-Bains. We live here openly as a gay couple and feel completely at ease, both in our neighbourhood and in everyday life.

The property is fully enclosed, with controlled access. It is equipped with an alarm system, and the communal and outdoor areas are monitored by security cameras. Each guest room also has its own private safe.

For your safety, all rooms are fitted with smoke detectors, and the swimming pool is equipped with the required safety features.

Villa Balāo has been designed so that, above all, you can relax, feel at ease and simply enjoy your stay.

No. Breakfast is included with every stay and is very much part of the Villa Balāo experience.

Of course, if you feel like skipping breakfast one morning, that’s absolutely fine — you’re always free to enjoy your stay your way. The room rate simply remains the same.

We love starting the day with our guests over breakfast, so rather than offering separate room-only rates, we’ve chosen to include it for everyone as part of your stay.
